John Stuart Mill and the Problem of Punishment.
This paper focuses on John Stuart Mill's opening chapter in On Liberty and some limits of Utilitarianism that Mill described in laying out the format of the book. On Liberty appeared in 1859 and is perhaps the most often read of Mill's philosophy, holding much to which he described elsewhere. The first chapter has been taken from a CD Rom Internet version posted by the University of Texas. (Lyon 2002) According to Lyon, the version is from an early 20th century volume in the Harvard Classics in philosophy series. (1909) The 1859 edition was released into the Public Domain in September of 1993.
